Is cheese safe for dogs?

You would be delighted to know that most dogs can eat cheese safely but there are some rules to follow. If you are sure that your dog well tolerate milk and dairy then the way to feed cheese is smooth for you. But not all dogs are lucky enough as some canines are lactose intolerant which makes cheese a definite no to feed.

In case if you don’t know whether your dog is dairy intolerant or not, start by sharing a very small amount of cheese, and gage your dog very carefully for any symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, constipation or abdominal discomfort. If you see any of the symptoms discontinue feeding as it’s not something good for your buddy.

If your dog tolerates dairy well some cheesy treats can be given to your buddy only on occasions but not often. Among the different varieties of cheese available on markets, select the low or reduced fat, low sodium and low lactose variety for your dog. Cottage cheese seems to be a good choice though. Remember moderation is the key as most varieties of cheese are very high in fat content, so overfeeding it can cause gastrointestinal problems, including pancreatitis, obesity and excessive weight gain especially in older dogs.

Cheese can be used well for dogs who are finicky at taking their medicines. Just pop the pill or tablet inside a small piece of cheese and your dog will take no time to gobble it and with much pleasure. Another much better and healthy option to secretly wrap your dog’s medicine is peanut butter.

Cheese is not the pill popper option only, you can also use it as a training treat. May it be housebreaking, toilet training or obedience training, your dog will respond as a good boy to your call for his favorite cheese treat, so avail the cheesy opportunity to make your buddy behave the way you want.
