What is Pepto bismol?

Pepto bismol or most commonly called as pink bismuth is the trade name for Bismuth subsalicylate which is an antidiarrheal medication used to treat occasional discomforts of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract, such as diarrhea, indigestion, heartburn and nausea. Pepto bismol contains salicylic acid which is a bit similar to aspirin. It actually works by reducing the growth of bacteria that might be responsible for causing diarrhea.

Also, remember that the amount of dosage will depend upon the size of the dog. A dosage of 15 mL four to six times per day may be used to treat a 30 pound dog. If your dog is pregnant, lactating or is allergic to aspirin use with your vet’s recommendation only.

Every dog digestive power is not the same and may react to a medicine in a different way. Over dosage of the medicine could have some mild to adverse side effects. When treating your dog with Pepto bismol it is important to monitor your dog very closely. Some of the possible side effects of Pepto bismol are:

  • Seizures
  • Kidney failure
  • Dark colored tongue
  • Dark colored stools
  • An interference with readings of abdominal X-Rays

To give dogs Pepto bismol for an upset stomach is considered safe as it soothess the discomforts associated with stomach and gastrointestinal tract but not harmless as with all the medicines available, the possible side effects are there.
